Existing at a distance of 350 km. from Kathmandu, Lumbini was a beautiful garden, at the time Buddha took his birth here, in 560 B.C. He was born on the way to Tilaurakot, where his mother Maya Devi, the queen of Kapilvastu, was traveling to her home, for her delivery. Legend has it that just after his birth, Buddha traveled 7 steps to the north, which is now depicted as 7 lotus flowers looking in all directions. He showed signs of special characteristics and aura since his early childhood. Buddha stayed at Lumbini as a prince till the age of 29, when he happened to encounter a diseased man, a decaying corpse, and an ascetic, which depressed him to an extent of abandoning his home, family and all his materialistic belongings and travel around in search of wisdom. Years later, here turned back to his birthplace, after getting enlightened, and visited places all around Asia, preaching thoughts of truth and non-violence.

At present there are about 62 archaeological sites and numerous monasteries in Lumbini. One of theism the Asoka pillar,named after the great emperor Ashoka (an ancient emperor of the Maurya dynasty who ruled almost all of the Indian subcontinent from c.2,68 to 232 BCE.). Discovered in 1,896, this pillar is believed to mark the spot of Emperor Asoka’s visit to Lumbini. The site was not known as Lumbini before the pillar was discovered. According to an inscription on the pillar, it was placed there by the people then in charge of the park to commemorate Asoka’s visit and gifts. Lumbini was in scripted as a World Heritage site by the UNESCO in 1997.

Maya Devi Temple

The Maya Devi temple, named after Gautam Buddha’s mother, is said to be the exact place where Buddha was born. There are drawings depicting his birth inside. The current white washed temple was built to protect the older
temple under it. Inside the temple are mud bricks and a small area looking down into dug out area which marks the exact place of birth. Around the temple is a sacred pool (known as Puskarni) and a sacred garden. The archaeological remains at the site were previously dated to the third-century.

Kapilvastu

Kapilvastu was the then capital of the Shakya kingdom where Buddha was born to king Shuddhodhana of this clan.It was at this place, where Buddha stayed as a prince till the age of 29, after which he left his home, family and all his materialistic belongings in search of wisdom. Twelve years later, after his enlightenment, he came back to his home and preached his sermons overhear. None of the temples or monuments at Lumbini were seriously affected by the 2015 earthquake.

Tilaurakot

Tilaurakot locates at a distance of 24 km. to the west of Lumbini. It is believed to contain the remains of ancient Kapilvastu, seat of the ancient Shakya kingdom and the childhood home of Prince Siddhartha. True it is that Tilaurakot receives far fewer visitors than Lumbini, yet its ruins disagree to be less interesting. The remains include a couple of stupa bases, thick fortress walls and four gates. Other than quite a few scattered fountains of ancient palaces, stupa’s and monasteries, archaeologists have discovered thirteen successive layers of human presence (habitation), the oldest dating back to the eight century B.C. It definitely is ant-to-miss visit for Buddhist as well as historians and scholars.
